Ascending Somamous Peak
Ascending Somamous peak (3,680 m) from Gileboom takes about one and a half day. The best time is late spring and summer (May-August). It is recommended that you accompany a local guide in your first ascent.
The trip begins by driving for one hour from Khayyat-Mahale to Javaherdasht using 4×4 Jeeps. It is best to sleep there for the night to allow the body to adjust to the high altitude. It is possible to stay in rural houses and eat with the locals.
The ascent begins early next morning. An average-experienced trekking team can reach the peak in 6-7 hours. The trail has gentle slopes in the beginning but the slopes get steeper eventually. The higher altitudes offer a unique view of the Caspian Sea all the way to Chamkhale beach.
The weather is very varying in these heights. Sometimes a blanket of fog covers the landscape and it appears as if you are walking over the clouds but then again the sun shines and the fog disappears.
Somamous is the highest peak in Guilan Province and is a limestone mountain. Peaks have always been regarded as glorious and majestic landmarks by ancient Iranians. The word Somamous means “Holy Place.”
